Earlier this evening just before 6:00pm, Franklin D1 was dispatched to the area of Amwell Rd and Market St in East Millstone for a MVC with fluids on the ground. Deputy 28 arrived established command and advised Somerset County Communications that both drivers had sustained injuries from the crash. Squad 28 and Hazmat 26 Elizabeth Avenue VFC arrived to mitigate the fluid spills from the vehicles and secure power to the batteries. Station 44 Middlebush Volunteer Fire Dept fire police assisted with traffic control as it was still rush hour. Our fire police responded and blocked the road by our Firehouse while Chief 28 blocked traffic in Millstone Borough. We stood by while the patients were transferred to Ems and the vehicles were removed from the roadway. Companies were clear around 7:30 pm.

As a friendly reminder if an emergency vehicle is blocking the road and directing you a different way, it is for your safety and the safety of Emergency personal working on scene. Please do not drive around these emergency vehicles. This Fire Co. is AMAZING! In addition to protecting people pay attention to the fact that they even put measures in place to prevent pollutants from getting in the storm drain. Impressive!

Last night our members participated in the Somerville Holiday Light Parade! Members worked hard since 10:30 in the morning to get all the trucks ready! Another fun year hosted by Somerville Volunteer Fire Department, We won best decorated Brush Truck and a special judges award for our decorated Fan Trailer! There was plenty of tough competition from all surrounding companies this year and it drives us to keep stepping our game up! Last night before the Tree Lighting Ceremony, we recieved a call at our Firehouse from someone stating there was smoke coming from a neighbors house in Millstone Borough. Deputy 28 and Squad with a crew of 6 responded and once arriving on scene quickly determined that a fireplace was lit without the flue being opened. The wood and ashes were watered down outside and the house was naturally ventilated. As a reminder while it may seem faster to call your local fire department, Always call 911 and do your very best to get an address for the emergency or as close as you can to it. We are 100% volunteer and not always at the firehouse. Luckily it was an honest mistake. Last night we were requested for our drones to this fire to assist the crews on the ground. We put 2 drones in service and were able to help point out hot spots and locate where pockets of fire remained. Our drones have thermal capabilities which is an asset in many ways with this just being one of them. We are always happy to assist surrounding companies any way we can. All crews on the ground did an outstanding job despite the terrain and conditions. We also had a member stay back with the brush truck and rangers incase they were also needed. James Fair Memorial Information

Update: We are making our final preparations for April 5th and we still need your help. Please respond if you will be attending, and if you have any media that you would like to share please contact us so we can incorporate them. We really look forward to spending a day of celebration with everyone that James has touched.

We will celebrating James’ life on April 5th. The services will start at 2pm at the United Methodist Church on Elm St in East Millstone. Immediately following the services, we will reconvene at Millstone Valley Fire Department for Food, Drinks, and Memories. All are welcome, but in an attempt to prepare for the day, we ask that you RSVP through this page to better provide us a head count. Please pass this information along to whoever may enjoy this day of celebration and remembrance.

Amwell Rd MV Fire

On Tuesday March 18th at 16:00, District #1 was alerted to a motor vehicle fire at 1815 Amwell Rd. Car 28 (Chief Stashek) arrived first to find a car in the driveway well involved, some small brush fires spreading, and a boat extremely close to the fire. Car 56 (Chief Panchery) arrived and was given command while Chief Stashek took operations.

Upon Engine 44-2’s arrival, the members of FM8 (Fire Prevention) pulled an 1 3/4″ bumper line and immediately stopped the fire from involving the boat. With the assistance of Engine 26-1’s crew, the remaining fire in the car and the small brush fires were extinguished.

Westbound traffic on Amwell Rd was diverted for approximately 30 minutes by Fire Police 44 while the crews operated.

Fire Damages Detached Garage

On Wednesday, March 12th at 14:36 District 1 companies were alerted to Mercury Street for reported smoke coming from the rear of a house. District 1 crews were clearing a commercial fire alarm call and responded immediately. Upon arrival Car 26 established command and upgraded the assignment to a structure fire in a detached garage on the property. Deputy 28 (McDonnell) took operations and with the FM8 members forced entry into the garage. Engine 261 crew contained the fire that was consuming the contents of the garage. Squad 28 arrived and supplied Engine 261 due to the lack of hydrants in the area. Squad 28 crew along with crews from Ladder 26, Engine 561 and Tender 44 completed overhaul. Scene was turned over to the fire marshals office (FM8) for investigation. Air 28 was on scene to provide air bottle filling and rehab of the members operating.

Fish Fry

Change your clock, Change your batteries

It’s that time of year again. Now that many of us have clocks that automatically change with Daylight Savings Time it is extremely important to not forget about changing your detector batteries. Even if your detectors are hard wired, there is still a battery inside as a backup just in case we lose power, like during Sandy. You must change your batteries at least annually, and if your detectors are not hard wired, at least semi-annually. Please don’t wait until the detector starts to beep at 3am, change the batteries now.

Also don’t forget to check your dates, smoke detectors are good for 10 years and Carbon Monoxide detectors are good for 5 years. There should be a date sticker on the back, don’t go by when you purchased it or bought your home. If you need assistance in changing your batteries please call the firehouse, NOT 911. We will be happy to assist you in checking your alarms, replacing your batteries, or answering any questions you may have.

Valentine Rose Sale

Due to the weather we will not be setting up a tent this year. We will be selling the roses from inside the building. We will be there from 7am-7pm on Thursday and Friday, despite the snow! Please use extra caution if you must travel Thursday morning, but if you are out, stop in and get your Valentine something nice.

It’s that special time of year again, it’s time to show those special people in your life that you really care about them. Stop by the firehouse on Thursday or Friday 2/13 – 2/14 between 7am-7pm. We will have roses for $12 a dozen and other assorted candies and gifts for $2-$5. Get yours early, since we have been advised that quantities may be limited due to the weather.

Ex-Chief James Fair Passes

Friends and family, we will be gathering at the East Millstone Methodist Church (Elm St, East Millstone) for a celebration of James’ life. Services will be held at 2pm on April 5th, 2014. After the services, all are welcome to join us at our firehouse (Millstone Valley Fire Department) for food, drinks, laughs and reminiscing.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Ex-Chief and Life Member James Fair. In addition to his service with the Millstone Valley Fire Department James served his community as a Fire District #1 Commissioner, and Captain of the East Millstone First Aid Squad. James was a cornerstone of the East Millstone community devoting his life to helping others, mentoring the town’s youth and strong leadership to his emergency services peers.

At this time the family will be holding services in Florida, where James lived. A memorial is being planned in East Millstone for the spring time to celebrate his life. As more information becomes available we will update this post.
